The Ottawa Black Creatives Hub
If I don’t have experience in my creative field can I still come?
Of course! That is our goal - to connect creatives who are up-and-coming with more seasoned and experienced creatives. If you are new creative and would like to meet people in your industry, this hub is for you!
What is the vibe at OBCH events? Suit and tie kind of thing? Or more casual? Semi-formal?
You see that image of a typical networking event that you have in your head? Throw it in the trash.
Think of every OBCH networking event like a mixer or social where you can mingle, grab and drink, an appetizer and networking. The idea of networking and putting yourself out there can be pretty daunting, especially if you are a new creative. Our goal is to create a chill, casual environment where you can network with little to no pressure.
I want to keep up with OBCH events. How can I make sure I stay in the loop?
There is no registration required to participate in events however, by signing up you will receive email notifications for OBCH events directly to your email.
Please note that this sign up sheet is for black creatives only.
I want to know more. What are the goals of the hub?
Glad you asked! We aim to create spaces where creatives can link up, learn, network and showcase their art. Our three main goals are:
Professional Development: supporting creatives in their professional development with panels, workshops and other educational events and tools
Relationship-building: creating spaces where creatives can connect and network safely in a comfortable environment
Showcasing Black Art and Creativity: creating platforms and events where creatives and artists can showcase their art (such as the performing arts showcase)
In addition, we are hoping to change the way creatives think about networking. For many, the idea of a networking event can be daunting because the image of a suit and tie and classical music is what comes to mind.
We want to change that. We are hoping to create a casual and chill atmosphere for folks to network freely with little to no pressure.
Are OBCH events exclusive to black creatives?
Yes, events OBCH events are only for creatives who are or identify as black.
As we continue to grow, we hope to host some OBCH events that are open to black creatives and allies, but for now, as a general rule, OBCH are only for black creatives.
for artists, creative entrepreneurs and everyone in between that is a part of the creative ecosystem.
As Ottawa’s artistic and cultural scene keeps blossoming, black creatives are often left out of the conversation. Amazing projects, organizations and groups don’t get the recognition and coverage they deserve due to multiple factors, one of them being the lack of opportunities to promote our work and to talk about it with likeminded people in our respective industries.
We need more space by us for us.
So what is the OBCH exactly?
The Ottawa Black Creatives is a social club within Hors Pair Social for creatives in Ottawa that identify as black. Given that many creatives do not fall under one artistic category, we've consciously broadened the term 'artist' to 'creative' to include everyone. Musical artists, painters, dancers, poets AND event planners, community organizers, public speakers, content creators and any other creatives in non-typical artistic categories.
Networking events, networking parties, socials, mixers - our focus is getting creatives together stregthening connections with creatives communities
So is it like a club? Do I need to register to participate?
The Ottawa Black Creatives Hub is a social club and community of black creatives in Ottawa. It’s not an event or platform. Through this hub we will hosting different events that focused on education and networking.
